FuelCell Energy, Inc., in collaboration with partners such as Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, Expander Energy Inc., and St. Marys Cement, has received a $5.9 million CAD grant from Natural Resources Canada’s Clean Fuels Fund to support innovative eFuel projects in Canada. These projects aim to produce synthetic diesel fuels with low carbon intensity using zero-carbon hydrogen generated through FuelCell Energy's Solid Oxide electrolysis platform. The eFuels, known as power-to-liquid (PtL), can serve as a replacement for or blend with conventional fuels like gasoline and diesel, offering significant emission reduction benefits. The projects align with FuelCell Energy's mission to provide sustainable energy solutions and demonstrate the efficiency and scalability of their technology. By leveraging nuclear power at 100% electrical efficiency, the projects aim to create eFuels that are CO2 neutral and can effectively decarbonize sectors like transportation and heating. The projects will assess the economic viability of producing synthetic diesel fuels using biomass gasification and hydrogen from solid oxide electrolysis, with the goal of establishing a plant capable of producing 550 barrels per day of synthetic fuel. FuelCell Energy's solid oxide products offer advantages in synthetic fuel production due to their high electrical efficiency, enabling increased fuel production and integration with other processes for enhanced efficiency.
