Energy Vault and Carbosulcis have announced a groundbreaking 100MW Hybrid Gravity Energy Storage Project in Sardinia, Italy, at the largest former coal mining site owned by the Sardinia Regional Government. This initiative is part of the region's plan to convert the coal mine into a Carbon-Free Technology Hub. The project will utilize Energy Vault's EV0™ gravity technology, lithium-ion batteries, and VaultOS™ energy management software to repurpose the 500-meter-deep mine shafts for energy storage. The system is designed to optimize the site's specific topology and is expected to be fully operational by 2025. The collaboration aims to stabilize Sardinia's power grid, support the local use of renewable energy, and aid in the economic revitalization of the region. By repurposing the coal mine, the project aligns with the Sardinia Regional Government's goal of minimizing environmental impact and transitioning to sustainable energy sources. The partnership between Energy Vault and Carbosulcis signifies a long-term commitment to providing innovative energy solutions that contribute to a greener future. Francesco Lippi, CEO of Carbosulcis, emphasized the importance of the project in maximizing the use of renewable energy and improving the stability of Sardinia's power grid. Marco Terruzin, Chief Commercial and Product Officer at Energy Vault, expressed pride in collaborating with Carbosulcis and highlighted the vast potential of their energy storage solutions. The project not only showcases the versatility of Energy Vault's technology but also serves as a model for repurposing former coal sites globally. The announcement of the project coincided with the introduction of Energy Vault's EV0™ within their Gravity Energy Storage System portfolio. This innovative solution addresses the unique requirements of underground deep mine shafts, opening up new possibilities for energy storage applications. The project's successful implementation is expected to establish a blueprint for utilizing renewable energy in repurposed industrial sites, setting a precedent for sustainable energy transitions worldwide.
