Energy Vault and Carbosulcis have announced a groundbreaking 100MW Hybrid Gravity Energy Storage Project in Sardinia, Italy, at the largest former coal mining site owned by the Sardinia Regional Government. This initiative is part of the region's plan to convert the coal mine into a Carbon-Free Technology Hub. The project will utilize Energy Vault's EV0™ gravity technology, lithium-ion batteries, and VaultOS™ energy management software to repurpose the 500-meter-deep mine shafts for energy storage. The system is designed to optimize the site's specific topology and is expected to be fully operational by 2025. The collaboration aims to stabilize Sardinia's power grid, support the local use of renewable energy, and aid in the economic revitalization of the region. By repurposing the coal mine, the project aligns with the Sardinia Regional Government's goal of minimizing environmental impact and transitioning to sustainable energy sources.
