  • The innovative technology can capture over 30kg of hydrogen per year with a 0.5m2 active surface area, presenting a promising alternative to traditional electrolysers.
  • While the technology has limitations related to module size and electrical resistance, its stability, robustness, and efficiency make it a significant advancement in hydrogen production methods.
Three Fraunhofer institutes in Germany have collaborated on a groundbreaking direct solar water-splitting technology for hydrogen production. The Neo-PEC joint research projects have led to the creation of a tandem PEC module that enables both solar energy generation and hydrogen production within the same unit. By coating commercial glass with semiconductor materials, the module efficiently absorbs light to facilitate the release of hydrogen from water on one side and oxygen on the other. The development of high-purity semiconductor materials and innovative coating methods has substantially increased the module's hydrogen production rate. The reactor, with a 0.5m2 active surface area, has the capacity to capture over 30kg of hydrogen annually under European sunlight conditions. Despite some limitations in module size and electrical resistance, the technology offers a simpler and more efficient solution compared to conventional electrolysers. The stability, robustness, and effectiveness of the system mark a significant advancement in the field of hydrogen production. The innovative approach by the Fraunhofer institutes showcases the potential for enhancing renewable energy sources and contributing to a more sustainable future.
