ITM Power to Supply 100MW Electrolyser Stacks for Shell's REFHYNE II Project
Key Ideas
  • ITM Power secures a contract to supply 100MW of Trident PEM electrolyser stacks for Shell's REFHYNE II project in Germany.
  • The project aims to produce up to 44,000kg of renewable hydrogen daily for decarbonizing operations at Shell's Wesseling refinery.
  • Linde Engineering will collaborate with ITM to ensure the electrolyser begins operation in 2027, following the success of the REFHYNE I plant.
  • The transition to producing Group III base oils at the Wesseling site is expected to significantly reduce Shell's scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 620,000 tonnes annually.
UK-based ITM Power has signed a contract with Shell to supply 100MW of Trident Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser stacks for the REFHYNE II project at the Shell Rheinland Energy and Chemicals Park in Germany. This project, enabled by renewable electricity, aims to generate 44,000kg of renewable hydrogen daily to decarbonize operations at Shell's Wesseling refinery. Linde Engineering will be the EPC integrator working alongside ITM to ensure the successful operation of the electrolyser by 2027, building on the experience gained from the REFHYNE I plant. ITM's CEO highlighted the pivotal role of their electrolyser technology in Shell's decision-making process. Moreover, Shell's plan to repurpose the Wesseling site into a base oil production unit coupled with the cessation of crude oil processing by 2025 is expected to reduce the company's carbon emissions by 620,000 tonnes annually, aligning with Shell's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
