Kazakh First Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar met with Wabtec CEO Rafael Santana to discuss plans for producing new generation green locomotives in Kazakhstan. Sklyar emphasized the government's commitment to developing the railway industry and thanked Wabtec for establishing an engineering center in Astana. The center, a subsidiary of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), is set to focus on producing locomotives using alternative energy sources like hydrogen, alongside liquefied natural gas and batteries. Santana confirmed the center's dedication to advancing repair and maintenance services for locomotives made in Kazakhstan and utilized in various countries. Wabtec, known for its global transportation solutions, is exploring ways to convert diesel engines to burn hydrogen directly and embrace zero-emissions fuel cell technology. With a recent investment of $1 billion in Kazakhstan, the company plans to produce hydrogen-fueled locomotives as part of KTZ's fleet upgrade. The TE33A locomotives, already reducing emissions significantly, are a pivotal part of this green initiative. Wabtec's vision for hydrogen as a locomotive fuel showcases a positive step towards sustainable transportation solutions, aligning with global efforts for environmental conservation and reducing carbon footprint.
