Mannheim Embraces Hydrogen: New Refuelling Station Supports Fleet Transition
Key Ideas
  • A new hydrogen refuelling station has opened at a bus depot in Mannheim, Germany, supporting the transition to hydrogen fuel cell buses for rnv's fleet.
  • The station offers dispensing options at both 350 and 700 bar, catering to a variety of vehicles including trucks, buses, refuse collectors, and cars.
  • The H2-Rhein-Neckar project backed by the State Baden-Württemberg aims to showcase hydrogen technologies, promoting its use in public transport and municipal operations.
  • Mayor Christian Specht expressed enthusiasm for the hydrogen projects in the region, highlighting their role in making Mannheim and the surrounding area more sustainable and independent of fossil fuels.
A new hydrogen refuelling station has been inaugurated at a bus operator's depot in Mannheim, Germany, marking a significant step towards embracing hydrogen technology in the transportation sector. The station, operated by H2Mobility, is located at rnv's depot and will serve both public and fleet vehicles, including rnv's 13 H2-eCitario hydrogen fuel cell buses. With dispensing options available at 350 and 700 bar, a wide range of vehicles such as trucks, buses, refuse collectors, and cars can refuel at the Mannheim facility. rnv plans to replace its diesel-fuelled buses with hydrogen and battery alternatives following successful trials of Mercedes-produced hydrogen buses earlier this year. Thanks to funding from the State Baden-Württemberg, the operator will introduce 40 H2-eCitaro buses in Mannheim and Heidelberg, where another refuelling station opened in April. The H2-Rhein-Neckar project, supported by the state, aims to showcase hydrogen technologies in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. Martin Jüngel from H2 Mobility emphasized the increasing popularity of hydrogen in mobility in the region, highlighting its usage in public transport and municipal operations. Mayor Christian Specht praised the cooperation projects in the region, stating they are essential for a sustainable future independent of fossil fuels.
