Panasonic Tests Green Hydrogen Power Generation System in UK Plant
Key Ideas
  • Panasonic is conducting a test run at a microwave oven plant in the UK to operate solely on renewable energy using a system powered by green hydrogen.
  • The power generation system consists of 21 fuel cell generators, lithium storage batteries, and solar panels to provide stable power for assembling microwave ovens, with waste heat used for heating.
  • The company plans to expand similar trials in Europe and establish a business around the power generation system by 2030, with upcoming installations in Germany.
  • Panasonic aims to utilize AI technology to optimize energy management methods based on data collected during the test runs at different locations.
Panasonic has initiated a test run at a microwave oven plant in Cardiff, Wales, part of the United Kingdom, to operate the facility entirely on renewable energy. The company has installed a groundbreaking power generation system that utilizes green hydrogen, produced without emitting carbon dioxide. This system, comprising 21 fuel cell generators, two lithium storage batteries, and existing solar panels, is set to enable operations powered by renewable energy starting in March next year. The goal is to ensure the stable generation and distribution of 1 gigawatt-hour of power required annually for the microwave oven assembly, utilizing Panasonic's AI-based control system. Additionally, waste heat produced during power generation will be repurposed for heating at the plant. Panasonic plans to extend similar trials to other locations in Europe, with a vision to establish a business model centered around this innovative power generation system by 2030. CEO Masahiro Shinada highlighted the company's intention to gather and analyze energy management data from these trials to tailor management methods to each site's unique requirements. Furthermore, in the upcoming months, Panasonic intends to implement a comparable power generation system at a plant in Germany.
