Pioneering Ammonia-to-Hydrogen Technology for Zero Emissions in Maritime Industry
Key Ideas
  • Amogy and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. completed a feasibility study on onboard hydrogen production and utilization in collaboration with ammonia-cracking technology.
  • The goal is to help the maritime industry achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 by exploring hydrogen supply plants and power trains combining ammonia cracking with hydrogen fuel cells.
  • Ammonia is seen as a promising fuel to reduce emissions in the maritime sector, with Amogy's technology breaking down ammonia for hydrogen production and fuel cell energy generation.
  • MSB aims to contribute to decarbonization, achieve a carbon-neutral society, and reduce global environmental impacts through the development of ammonia handling systems for maritime use.
Amogy, a provider of ammonia-to-power solutions, and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MSB) have conducted a feasibility study on onboard hydrogen production and utilization. The collaboration involves Amogy's ammonia-cracking technology and Mitsubishi Ammonia Supply and Safety System (MAmmoSS®). The project, aimed at helping the maritime industry reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, explores hydrogen supply plants and power trains combining ammonia cracking with hydrogen fuel cells. Ammonia is being considered as a low-carbon fuel for the maritime sector due to its carbon-free properties, with potential applications for clean energy. Amogy's technology breaks down liquid ammonia into nitrogen and hydrogen, with the hydrogen utilized in fuel cells for efficient power generation. Through this partnership, MSB intends to advance decarbonization in maritime activities, promote a carbon-neutral society, and reduce environmental impacts. The collaboration also involves the development of marine ammonia handling systems, including fuel supply systems for various ammonia fuel consumers. Contact is encouraged for those interested in engaging with shipyards working on the decarbonization of the marine industry.
