  • RTS aims to achieve a fully zero-emission bus fleet by 2040, aligning with Governor Kathy Hochul's executive order for sustainability.
  • Despite the high upfront cost of $1.4 million per bus, RTS anticipates long-term savings due to lower maintenance expenses compared to diesel buses.
  • Hydrogen fuel cell buses offer advantages like extended range, continuous battery charging, and zero emissions, making them a practical choice for all-day operations.
Regional Transit Service (RTS) has introduced two new environmentally friendly additions to its bus fleet in New York State. These buses are powered by hydrogen fuel cells, making them the first of their kind in the state. The initiative is part of RTS's commitment to achieving a fully zero-emission bus fleet by 2040, in accordance with Governor Kathy Hochul's sustainability goals. RTS CEO Miguel Velázquez emphasized the importance of providing safe, reliable, convenient, and sustainable transportation, stating that the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell technology will further this mission. While the cost of each hydrogen fuel cell bus is significant at $1.4 million, federal funds will support the investment. RTS spokesperson Tom Brede highlighted the long-term cost benefits of these buses, citing lower maintenance expenses compared to traditional diesel buses. He also noted that hydrogen fuel cell buses have advantages over all-electric vehicles, such as greater range and continuous battery charging, especially in cold weather conditions. RTS plans to acquire an additional 10 hydrogen fuel cell buses by late 2025, supplementing the existing fleet of 20 plug-in electric buses. In Monroe County, where over 225 diesel buses are currently in operation, the goal is to phase out diesel bus purchases by 2028. The shift towards hydrogen fuel cell technology not only promotes sustainability but also ensures efficient and reliable public transportation services for the community.
