Viking and Fincantieri have made headlines with their announcement of the world's first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, the Viking Libra. This innovative vessel, currently under construction at Fincantieri's Ancona shipyard, is set to revolutionize the cruise industry by offering zero local emissions during operation. Scheduled for delivery in late 2026, the Viking Libra will feature a hybrid propulsion system that combines liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells. With a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300 tons and 499 staterooms accommodating 998 guests, the ship represents a significant step towards sustainable maritime transportation. Supported by Isotta Fraschini Motori, Fincantieri's subsidiary specializing in advanced fuel cell technology, the Viking Libra's propulsion system will be capable of generating up to six megawatts of power. In addition to the Viking Libra, the companies have confirmed plans for the hydrogen-powered Viking Astrea, with both ships paving the way for a greener future in cruising. Furthermore, Viking has secured contracts for additional hydrogen-powered ocean ships, with orders expected for 26 river ships by 2028 and 11 ocean ships by 2031. The ambitious expansion aims to establish Viking as a leader in sustainable shipbuilding, with a vision of operating 110 river ships and 23 ocean and expedition ships by 2031.
