Samskip has announced a partnership in the HyEkoTank project, part of the Horizon Europe programme, to retrofit its multipurpose vessel, Samskip Kvitnos, with cutting-edge hydrogen fuel cell technology developed by TECO 2030. The retrofit, scheduled for completion in 2025, aims to significantly reduce emissions while maintaining operational efficiency on Samskip's routes from Rotterdam to Hammerfest along the Norwegian west coast. By investing in zero-emission fuel cells, Samskip is preparing to comply with upcoming regulations like FuelEU Maritime and the EU Emissions Trading System. The company also aims to address the need for zero emissions in Norwegian fjords by 2030. Erik Hofmeester, Head of Vessel Management at Samskip, highlighted the alignment of this retrofit with their vision for sustainable shipping and meeting zero-emission targets set by the EU and Norwegian authorities. The collaboration with TECO 2030 is a strategic move towards achieving net zero by 2040. The HyEkoTank project, supported by partners like Shell, Umoe Advanced Composites, and the Arctic University of Norway, will focus on implementing advanced technologies for zero-emission navigation in European coastal areas and the Norwegian fjords to ensure environmental sustainability for future generations.
