  • KAUST establishes a state-of-the-art laboratory under its Clean Energy Research Platform to optimize PEM fuel cell technology for the region.
  • The partnership supports Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 and aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2060 through sustainable hydrogen solutions.
  • KAUST aims to lead in hydrogen innovation and produce green and blue hydrogen, targeting 2.9 million tons of hydrogen production by 2030.
Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has partnered with Abdul Latif Jameel Motors and Toyota Motor Corporation to advance hydrogen fuel cell technology in the country. The collaboration aims to support Saudi Arabia's decarbonization efforts, aligning with the national goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2060. KAUST has acquired Proton Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cell modules from Toyota to establish a cutting-edge laboratory dedicated to researching and optimizing hydrogen fuel cells under its Clean Energy Research Platform (CERP). This partnership signifies KAUST's commitment to drive innovation in sustainable solutions and contribute to a greener future. The research efforts led by Professor Mani Sarathy and his team focus on exploring the performance, durability, and environmental integration of PEM fuel cells, with technical and financial support from Toyota and Abdul Latif Jameel Motors. The team is working on maximizing the efficiency and environmental benefits of fuel cells tailored to Saudi Arabia's unique conditions. Saudi Arabia, with abundant renewable energy resources, is strategically positioned to produce green and blue hydrogen using Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technology. The Kingdom aims to produce 2.9 million tons of hydrogen by 2030, emphasizing competitive costs for domestic consumption and export, further solidifying its position in sustainable energy production and technology development.
