Switch Maritime is set to order the first hydrogen-powered ropax in the US, building on the success of their hydrogen-fueled ferry operations in San Francisco. The company plans to use a design already approved for use in Norway for this 80-car, 300-passenger vessel, which will run on liquefied hydrogen (LH2). This order is part of Switch's commitment to leading the US maritime energy transition, exploring hydrogen fuelling for various vessel types. The ropax design has received approval from classification society DNV, and the company is working towards compliance with US regulations in collaboration with the US Coast Guard. The vessel will have a service speed of 14 knots and will require weekly fuelling by truck. Switch Maritime is focusing on hydrogen as a fuel source due to its high energy density, which supports greater range and power requirements, making it a viable option where battery-only solutions fall short. The company aims to simplify zero-emissions vessel operations by eliminating the need for fixed shoreside charging infrastructure, opting for established truck-to-ship or ship-to-ship fuelling practices.
