Ulsan, a special metropolitan city in South Korea lacking an urban railway, is set to introduce the country's first hydrogen tram system on Metro Line 1. The city has secured approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to commence construction next year, targeting a 2028 opening. With a total project cost of 381.4 billion won, primarily funded by national sources, Ulsan aims to boost eco-friendly transportation. The hydrogen tram, utilizing fuel cells instead of overhead wires, can travel 200 kilometers on a 20-minute charge, emitting only water vapor. This initiative aligns with Ulsan's designation as a hydrogen pilot city since 2019. The 10.9km route, featuring 15 stations, promises a 30% decrease in travel time compared to buses, enhancing metropolitan area connectivity.
