Victoria's Investment in Renewable Hydrogen for Enhanced Energy Resilience
Key Ideas
  • The Allan Labor Government in Victoria is investing in renewable hydrogen to ensure energy resilience during emergencies and power outages.
  • The Neerim North mobile network renewable hydrogen back-up system will provide up to 72 hours of back-up power, maintaining mobile coverage for communities.
  • Several hydrogen projects, including the Telstra Hydrogen Fuel Cell Pilot project and initiatives by other companies, are being implemented to enhance energy resilience across Victoria.
  • Renewable hydrogen is considered a critical component in Victoria's energy transition to strengthen energy resilience and keep communities powered reliably and affordably.
The Allan Labor Government in Victoria is making a significant investment in renewable hydrogen to enhance energy resilience during emergencies and power outages. Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D'Ambrosio recently launched the Neerim North mobile network renewable hydrogen back-up system. This system, equipped with 10-kilowatt renewable hydrogen generators, will provide up to 72 hours of back-up power, ensuring that mobile coverage is maintained for communities during extreme weather events. The Labor Government's $1.1 million investment in the Telstra Hydrogen Fuel Cell Pilot project has led to the installation of five hydrogen fuel cells in communities prone to storms. Additionally, companies like Volgren Australia, Viva Energy, Energys Australia, and Boundary Power are also involved in hydrogen pilots and trials as part of the $6.6 million Renewable Hydrogen Commercialisation Pathways Fund. One of the successful projects is Boundary Power's solar-renewable hydrogen standalone power system, commissioned in June 2023. Telstra is also exploring the role of renewable hydrogen in decarbonizing energy supply and enhancing energy resilience. The Telstra Hydrogen Fuel Cells, manufactured by Energys Australia, are being trialed to assess their potential in keeping customers connected during extreme weather events. Minister Lily D'Ambrosio emphasized that renewable hydrogen will be crucial in strengthening energy resilience as Victoria transitions towards a more sustainable energy future. Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing highlighted the importance of renewables in supporting communities during emergencies to ensure vital communications with emergency services. Telstra's Executive Vicki Romanovski expressed optimism about the pilot project's role in exploring renewable hydrogen as an alternative energy source to keep customers connected during adverse weather conditions.
