Viking and shipbuilder Fincantieri have announced their groundbreaking plans for the Viking Libra, the world's pioneer hydrogen-powered cruise ship scheduled for a 2026 premiere. Currently being built at Fincantieri's Ancona shipyard, the Viking Libra will showcase a hybrid propulsion system that combines liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells, allowing for zero-emission operation. Following the Libra, the Viking Astrea, also hydrogen-powered, is set for delivery in 2027. With an eco-conscious mindset, Viking aims to enhance its fleet's sustainability by investing in hydrogen technology, enabling access to environmentally sensitive areas. The company's Chairman and CEO, Torstein Hagen, expressed pride in the decision to embrace hydrogen as a zero-emission solution. Beyond the Libra and Astrea, Viking has secured contracts for additional eco-friendly ocean ships, contributing to a fleet projection of 110 river ships and 23 ocean/expedition vessels by 2031. This strategic move highlights Viking's commitment to environmental conservation and innovation in the marine industry.
