San Francisco Bay Ferry, in partnership with private and public sector collaborators, has introduced the MV Sea Change, the world's inaugural commercial passenger ferry fueled entirely by zero-emission hydrogen fuel cells. This groundbreaking vessel will commence public service on July 19, offering free rides between Pier 41 and the Downtown San Francisco Ferry Terminal. Operated by SWITCH Maritime and supported by a grant from the California Air Resources Board, the Sea Change is a six-month initiative to demonstrate the feasibility of fuel cell technology in curbing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing air quality. An innovative feature of the ferry is its emission of only water vapor, some of which is repurposed for the onboard water fountain, distinguishing it as the only vessel globally with drinkable emissions. Financial backing from partners like Chevron New Energies and United Airlines has enabled the project, emphasizing collaborative efforts in sustainable transportation development. With transportation identified as a major source of carbon dioxide emissions in the U.S., advancements in hydrogen fuel cell technology hold promise for combating climate change, particularly as 2024 is predicted to be a record-breaking hot year. The Sea Change represents an investment in California Climate Initiatives, utilizing cap-and-trade funds to diminish greenhouse gas emissions and enhance public health, particularly in underprivileged communities. San Francisco Bay Ferry, recognized for its environmentally conscious operations, plans to further reduce emissions by launching the country's first high-speed, zero-emission ferry network through the Rapid Electric Emission Free (REEF) Ferry Program, showcasing the agency's commitment to sustainable ferry services and environmental stewardship.
