BEEAH Unveils Plans for Groundbreaking Waste-to-Hydrogen Plant in Sharjah
Key Ideas
  • BEEAH, in partnership with international technology companies, is set to establish the Middle East's first commercial-scale waste-to-hydrogen plant in Al Sajaa, Sharjah.
  • The plant will utilize innovative technology to produce green hydrogen from organic-based waste, with an initial daily production capacity of 7 tons and plans to scale up to 20 tons per day.
  • In addition to green hydrogen, the plant will generate by-products like biogenic carbon dioxide and nitrogen for various industrial applications, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and waste diversion.
  • The project aligns with the UAE's National Hydrogen Strategy and aims to position the country as a global leader in hydrogen production, supporting the transition towards sustainable energy solutions.
BEEAH, a leading environmental management company in the UAE, has announced plans to establish the Middle East's first commercial-scale waste-to-hydrogen plant in Al Sajaa, Sharjah. This groundbreaking initiative, in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and international partners Chinook Hydrogen and Air Water Inc., aims to revolutionize energy production and mobility through the utilization of green hydrogen. The plant will deploy advanced gasification and hydrogen refinement technologies to convert organic-based waste, including Municipal Solid Waste, into high-quality green hydrogen suitable for various applications. Scheduled for commissioning in Q2 of 2027, the plant's initial phase will produce 7 tons of green hydrogen daily, with a vision to increase this to 20 tons per day in subsequent phases. Notably, the project will not only contribute to significant hydrogen production but also aid in waste management by diverting thousands of tons of waste annually and preventing around 30,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, the plant will generate valuable by-products like biogenic carbon dioxide and nitrogen, supporting the production of alternative fuels and industrial applications. The technology, endorsed by international consultants with a Technology Readiness Level of 6-7, showcases readiness for large-scale deployment following successful demonstrations in the UK and at COP28 UAE. The plant's development aligns with the UAE's ambitions outlined in the National Hydrogen Strategy, aiming to position the country as a key player in the global hydrogen production landscape by 2031. Through this project, BEEAH and its partners aim to contribute to the UAE's net-zero strategy, support hydrogen-fuelled mobility, and pave the way for sustainable energy solutions in the region and beyond.
