BMW is on the brink of making a significant decision regarding the production of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) by the end of 2024. The company's general manager of hydrogen technology, Dr Jürgen Guldner, emphasized the importance of the feedback received from the ongoing pilot fleet of iX5 Hydrogen FCEVs, indicating a potential launch of the first hydrogen-powered BMW production model by the end of the decade. BMW envisions a gradual transition similar to its approach with battery-electric vehicles, with plans for a range-wide rollout of hydrogen-powered models in the 2030s. The company's current focus lies on gathering data and feedback from a global tour of the iX5 hydrogen SUVs, with journalists recently test-driving these vehicles in Melbourne. Despite challenges in the hydrogen passenger car market, BMW remains committed to exploring the potential of hydrogen fuel cell technology, which has applications beyond passenger vehicles, including aircraft and heavy vehicles. The current iteration of the BMW iX5 showcases promising performance, with quick refuelling, a 500km driving range, and 295kW total system output. If the project receives approval, it could mark a significant step towards integrating hydrogen-powered vehicles into BMW's lineup, aligning with the company's sustainability goals and innovative vision.
