EET Hydrogen Power: Europe's First Hydrogen-Ready Plant for Carbon Reduction
Key Ideas
  • Essar Energy Transition launches EET Hydrogen Power, aiming to complete construction at Stanlow refinery by 2027, supporting low carbon process refinery goals and becoming a leading hydrogen producer in the UK.
  • The project will replace existing boiler units, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 740,000 tonnes annually, and contribute to cutting total emissions at Stanlow refinery by 95% by 2030, positioning it as the world's lowest carbon refinery.
  • EET Hydrogen Power will play a crucial role in decarbonisation plans for the wider HyNet industrial cluster, setting a blueprint for future decarbonisation initiatives while driving high skilled employment growth in the North West.
  • With an investment of $3.0 billion, EET's initiative signifies a significant step towards creating a low carbon energy transition hub in the North West of England, showcasing the pathway to decarbonising high emitting industries globally.
Essar Energy Transition has announced the launch of EET Hydrogen Power, Europe's first hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plant to be constructed at its Stanlow refinery in the UK, with an expected completion by 2027. The project, part of EET's $3.0 billion energy transition initiatives, aims to support EET Fuels' goal of being the lowest carbon process refinery worldwide and EET Hydrogen's ambition to lead low carbon hydrogen production in the UK. By replacing hydrocarbons with hydrogen, the new plant will contribute to reducing 740,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, aiding in the refinery's target to cut total emissions by 95% by 2030, making it the world's lowest carbon refinery. EET Hydrogen Power will be developed in two phases to reach a capacity of 125 MW of power with 6,000 tonnes per day of steam, replacing the existing boiler units at Stanlow. This project is pivotal for the decarbonisation plans of the broader HyNet industrial cluster, serving as a model for future industrial and power decarbonisation efforts. The investment also aligns with EET's objective to enhance skilled employment in the North West. Tony Fountain, Managing Partner of Essar Energy Transition, highlighted the progress made in advancing low carbon energy in the UK through EET Hydrogen Power, showcasing the pathway for decarbonising high emitting industries. Rob Wallace, CEO of EET Hydrogen Power, expressed ambitions for Stanlow to evolve into a low carbon transition hub in the HyNet Industrial Cluster, noting that the plant will be Europe's first 100% hydrogen-ready gas-turbine plant. The project aims to significantly reduce regional emissions and contribute to emission reduction targets. Overall, EET's investment program is expected to play a vital role in accelerating the UK's low carbon transformation, supporting government decarbonisation policies, and creating employment opportunities in the Northern Powerhouse economy.
