Essar Energy Transition Acquires Thornton Science Park to Develop Europe's Leading Energy Transition Hub
Key Ideas
- Essar Energy Transition acquires Thornton Science Park to establish an energy transition hub focusing on hydrogen fuel technologies.
- The acquisition is part of a plan to create one of Europe's main energy transition hubs and contribute to the UK's climate change goals.
- EET's vision includes developing low carbon hydrogen production hubs, hydrogen-fueled power plants, and energy storage infrastructure at the site.
- The hydrogen hub's construction will be phased, with a target capacity of more than 4,000MW by 2030, aiming to start producing low carbon hydrogen by 2027.
Essar Energy Transition (EET) has announced an agreement to acquire the 66-acre Thornton Science Park in Cheshire, United Kingdom. This acquisition is part of EET's strategy to establish Europe's leading energy transition hub with a focus on hydrogen fuel technologies. The Thornton Science Park has been instrumental in scientific and industrial research and is crucial to the Cheshire Science Corridor, connecting Liverpool and Manchester. EET aims to use the site to develop various energy transition projects, including low carbon refinery, large-scale hydrogen production hubs, hydrogen-fueled power plants, and energy storage infrastructure. Deepak Maheshwari, CEO of EET Fuels, highlighted the importance of this acquisition in advancing the UK's climate change goals and ensuring energy security while maintaining a strong manufacturing base. The hydrogen hub's development will progress in phases, starting with a 350MW capacity plant, increasing to 1,000MW, and targeting an overall capacity of over 4,000MW by 2030. Construction is expected to commence this year, with the production of low carbon hydrogen scheduled to begin at the site by 2027.
