The UK Government is expected to announce a significant £22bn funding for two hydrogen production and carbon capture clusters, one of which will be located near the River Mersey in Ellesmere Port. The HyNet consortium, dedicated to producing 'low carbon' hydrogen, will share this funding to supply factories across the North West region, contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions. The construction of a multi-billion pound hydrogen production hub at the Stanlow oil refinery is underway, aimed at utilizing 'blue hydrogen' and implementing carbon capture technology to mitigate CO2 emissions. Eni, an Italian oil producer, will establish a pipeline to transport captured CO2 for storage in depleted gas fields under Liverpool Bay, showcasing a comprehensive approach to sustainability. Despite concerns about the effectiveness of carbon capture and storage, the project also explores 'green hydrogen' production through renewable sources like wind or solar energy. While green hydrogen is seen as a more environmentally friendly option, blue hydrogen is considered a scalable solution currently. The initiative by HyNet highlights the importance of innovative approaches in the energy sector to align with the UK's net zero target and address climate change challenges.
