Croatian Refinery Transitions to Green Hydrogen with US Partnership
Key Ideas
  • A Croatian refinery in Rijeka is adopting green hydrogen to reduce carbon emissions with 10MW of PEM electrolysers supplied by Ohmium from the US.
  • Solar power will drive the electrolysers to replace grey hydrogen, aligning with Croatia's hydrogen production goals and the European green transition.
  • The project signifies a move towards sustainable fuel production, supported by the Croatian Government's Recovery and Resilience Facility.
  • Partnership between IVICOM and Ohmium aims to showcase a premier example of green transition in Europe, emphasizing the importance of hydrogen in refinery processes.
A Croatian refinery located in Rijeka is moving towards decarbonisation by incorporating green hydrogen in its operations. IVICOM, an engineering and construction firm, has chosen Ohmium, a US-based electrolyser manufacturer, to supply 10MW of PEM electrolysers for the construction of a green hydrogen plant at INA's Rijeka Refinery. This initiative aims to utilize new solar installations to power the electrolysers, replacing the grey hydrogen currently in use at the refinery. The project not only focuses on enhancing the refinery's operations but also aims to supply sustainable fuel to Croatia's market. Arne Ballantine, CEO of Ohmium, highlighted the importance of the electrolyser installation at the refinery, emphasizing its role in promoting the green transition in Europe. The project is supported by the Croatian Government's Recovery and Resilience Facility to help Croatia achieve its national hydrogen strategy target of installing 70MW of hydrogen production by 2030. The partnership between IVICOM and Ohmium symbolizes a significant step towards sustainable fuel production and signifies the growing importance of hydrogen in refinery processes within the European landscape.
