ADNOC Gas, in partnership with Baker Hughes, has successfully installed British climate technology firm Levidian’s LOOP technology at the Habshan Gas Processing Plant. This marks the first-ever deployment of the technology at an operational gas processing site. The technology captures carbon from methane and converts it into graphene, a material expected to have a significant impact on various industrial applications. Additionally, the process also produces hydrogen, contributing to global energy transition objectives. The LOOP unit installed is capable of producing over one tonne per annum of graphene and hydrogen, showcasing its dual-purpose innovation. ADNOC plans for future industrial-scale installations to increase this output to 15 tonnes per annum. Data collected during the pilot phase will be crucial in refining AI modelling and digital twins to optimize energy consumption and maximize graphene production in upcoming installations. The graphene generated at the Habshan Gas Processing Plant will be assessed by ADNOC’s Technology team for potential uses across different sectors. Graphene is known for its versatility, with applications ranging from improving the performance of electric vehicle batteries and solar panels to manufacturing stronger materials like concrete, tires, and polymer pipes. This innovative carbon capture and utilization process showcases a positive step towards sustainable energy practices and technological advancements.
