MOPCO and Thyssenkrupp Uhde Collaborate for Sustainable Ammonia and Urea Production in Egypt
Key Ideas
  • Thyssenkrupp Uhde partners with MOPCO in Egypt to upgrade ammonia and urea plants with carbon capture technology, aiming to remove 145,000 t/year of CO2 from flue gas.
  • New uhde® ammonia converter cartridges will boost ammonia production capacity by 150 mtpd per plant while reducing natural gas consumption by around 10%.
  • MOPCO plans to produce up to 150,000 tons per year of green ammonia by sourcing green hydrogen from new water electrolysis units powered by renewable energy.
  • The collaboration supports MOPCO's sustainability goals and positions them as leaders in MENA for climate-friendly urea and green ammonia production.
Thyssenkrupp Uhde has been selected by MOPCO in Egypt to provide advanced technology for their existing ammonia and urea plants in Damietta. The collaboration aims to enhance sustainability by implementing a carbon capture and usage solution, removing up to 145,000 tons per year of CO2 from flue gas and utilizing it in urea production. The project includes the installation of uhde® ammonia converter cartridges to increase ammonia production capacity and reduce natural gas consumption. Additionally, green hydrogen feedstock will be sourced from water electrolysis units powered by renewable energy to produce up to 150,000 tons per year of green ammonia. This initiative supports MOPCO's strategic goals for sustainability and positions them as leaders in the MENA region for producing environmentally friendly urea and green ammonia. The collaboration between MOPCO and Thyssenkrupp Uhde demonstrates a commitment to innovation and green solutions in the production of ammonia and urea.
