The Stark Area Regional Transit Authority (SARTA) in Canton recently celebrated receiving a $17.25 million federal grant to enhance its infrastructure. The funding will be utilized to renovate offices, construct a call center, and establish a 1.2-megawatt electrolyzer facility for hydrogen production, aiming to produce 400 kilograms of hydrogen gas daily to fuel SARTA's hydrogen vehicles. This move is part of SARTA's commitment to zero-emission technology in public transit. The electrolyzer is expected to be operational by 2027 and could potentially supply hydrogen to local businesses as well. Additionally, the grant supports a workforce development program in collaboration with educational institutions to prepare students for careers in the evolving hydrogen industry. SARTA's overall expansion initiative includes building new offices, conference rooms, a health clinic, and a walking path with added parking space. The project involves partnerships with Stark State College and R.G. Drage Career and Technical Center. Various government officials and representatives, including U.S. Rep. Emilia Sykes and local mayors, attended the event to show their support for SARTA's efforts in advancing sustainable transportation.
