Spain's government has approved the distribution of EUR 794m in public support for green hydrogen projects, emphasizing the development of electrolysis facilities close to consumption centers. Energy minister Teresa Ribera outlined the allocation, with significant portions going to hydrogen valleys in Puertollano, Asturias, and Los Barrios. Funding also supports the transition of Bilbao and Cartagena refineries from grey to green hydrogen, aiding industrial decarbonization efforts. These initiatives align with Spain's goal of reaching 4 GW of renewable hydrogen capacity by 2030. Ribera highlighted the importance of testing and verifying the viability of green hydrogen to decarbonize industrial processes that are hard to electrify. In a parallel move, the government approved regulations for floating solar plants on state-owned reservoirs, aiming to enhance solar power generation efficiency. These plants are expected to outperform land-based ones due to the cooling effect of water and the reduction of evaporation in reservoirs.
