As the energy transition accelerates, Spain is poised to capitalize on its green hydrogen potential to lead European production. With 11.0 GW of electrolyzer capacity planned by 2030, requiring significant investment, Spain aims to produce around 1.1 megatons of green hydrogen annually, leveraging its natural and technical advantages. The country's cost-competitive renewable energy, strong demand dynamics, and mature industrial footprint provide a foundation for success. Challenges such as cost increases and slow offtaker commitment can be addressed through public-private partnerships and regulatory support. Spain's abundance of low-cost renewable energy sources sets the stage for producing green hydrogen at €4.0 to €5.5 per kilogram by 2030, making it a cost-competitive player in the European market. Furthermore, Spain's potential in synthetic fuel production, driven by abundant biogenic CO2 emissions and competitive renewables, positions it as a key player in meeting future fuel demands. Geographically, Spain's infrastructure offers advantages for hydrogen transport and export, enhancing its potential to become a green hydrogen leader in Europe. To seize this opportunity, Spain must act swiftly amidst growing competition from other regions.
