Van Oord's Electric Crane Vessel Trial in Dordrecht with Hydrogen Integration
Key Ideas
  • Van Oord's Christiaan P crane vessel underwent successful retrofitting to electric propulsion, with the integration of hydrogen and battery systems.
  • The pilot project in Dordrecht aimed to assess the efficiency of battery-electric dredging operations and the potential of hydrogen charging during work.
  • Various measurements were conducted to evaluate energy consumption during different dredging tasks and charging methods, including shore power and hydrogen.
  • The project was well-received, with all trials showing promising results, and data analysis is currently ongoing to further understand the benefits of the new technology.
Van Oord, in collaboration with ZEDHub, Smart Delta Drechtsteden, the Municipality of Dordrecht, and the Port of Rotterdam, recently conducted a groundbreaking trial involving the fully electric crane vessel Christiaan P. This initiative marks a significant milestone in the dredging industry, as the vessel was retrofitted to replace traditional engines with electric motors, along with an electric crane. The project also included the installation of two DENS Powerhub mobile battery systems and a Nexus fuel cell with a hydrogen storage container for charging when shore power is unavailable. The pilot project, supported partially by the Regio Deal Drechtsteden-Gorinchem, aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of battery-electric dredging, particularly focusing on energy consumption and charging methods. Extensive testing was carried out to assess different operational scenarios, including varying dredging tasks and charging sources like shore power and hydrogen. Van Oord reported that all tests were successful, and the data collected is now undergoing analysis to determine the project's overall impact and potential for future applications in the dredging sector.
