Australia's National Road Transport Association is advocating for the establishment of a $3 billion Clean Transport Fund to facilitate the adoption of low-emission vehicles in the trucking industry. The proposal aims to assist businesses, especially small operators, in transitioning to electric trucks, investing in charging infrastructure, and exploring hydrogen-fuelled options. The group's submission to the government's Transport and Infrastructure Net Zero Consultation Roadmap emphasizes the need for significant financial support to accelerate the industry's move towards cleaner transportation solutions. The industry's average profit margin of two percent makes it challenging for operators to make substantial investments in new vehicles, hence the call for a dedicated fund to alleviate financial barriers. The fund would also address the higher upfront costs of electric trucks compared to diesel equivalents and promote the use of low carbon fuels to reduce emissions. Furthermore, regulatory adjustments are deemed essential to ensure the successful integration of low-emission trucks, including defining operational areas, offering fair contracts, and backing the use of environmentally friendly fuels. The proposed fund would support initiatives over seven years and play a crucial role in steering the industry towards achieving climate targets and contributing to a more sustainable future.
