Daimler Truck has initiated customer trials for their Mercedes-Benz GenH2 hydrogen fuel cell trucks with major companies like Amazon, Air Products, Holcim, INEOS, and Wiedmann & Winz. Over the course of a year, five prototype trucks will undergo real-world testing on various long-haul routes in Germany to gather crucial data that will shape the development of future CO2-neutral trucks. These trials, starting at the Daimler Truck Test and Development Center in Woerth am Rhein, aim to demonstrate the feasibility of hydrogen-powered trucks for sustainable transportation. The trucks will be refueled at designated liquid hydrogen stations in Woerth am Rhein and Duisburg and will be closely monitored by Daimler Truck to ensure performance and safety standards are met. The GenH2 Trucks are designed to match conventional trucks in payload, range, and performance, featuring a 25-ton payload capacity, 300 kW fuel cell system supported by a 400 kW battery, and the ability to travel over 1,000 kilometers on a single fill of 88 kg of liquid hydrogen. These technical specifications highlight the potential of liquid hydrogen for long-haul transportation due to its higher energy density. Industry leaders like Air Products, Amazon, and Holcim have expressed their support for the trials, emphasizing the significance of transitioning to sustainable transport solutions.
