Hyundai Motor has revealed a new partnership with autonomous driving software company Plus to launch the US's first level four autonomous class eight hydrogen fuel cell electric truck. This announcement took place at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo in the US. The XCIENT fuel cell truck by Hyundai will incorporate Plus' SuperDrive level four autonomous driving technology. This truck is undergoing initial autonomous driving assessments in the US, marking a significant development as the first level four self-driving test on a class eight fuel cell electric truck in the country. Hyundai's Martin Zeilinger expressed excitement about testing this technology on their XCIENT truck to enhance road safety and freight efficiencies. The XCIENT fuel cell truck, introduced in 2020, has already been operating commercially in eight countries worldwide. Plus' SuperDrive solution, known for its advanced sensors for surround perception and self-driving capabilities, is being deployed in the US, Europe, and Australia. Plus' COO, Shawn Kerrigan, highlighted the importance of creating sustainable and safe transportation options through autonomous hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks. This collaboration aims to support a decarbonized future while improving safety and efficiency in the transportation sector.
