Tata Motors has launched the Tata Prima H.28, the first hydrogen-powered commercial vehicle in India, at the India Mobility Expo 2025. This initiative aligns with the surging demand for green energy and electric vehicles in the country. The company, in partnership with Indian Oil Corporation, is set to commence a pilot project involving hydrogen-powered trucks, aiming to clean up the transport sector and diminish India's reliance on petrol, diesel, and CNG. The pilot project will span 18 months and operate on three major routes, with around 15 trucks participating. The Tata Prima H.28 boasts a four-cylinder H2ICE engine, providing a mileage of 550 km solely on hydrogen-generated electricity. This signifies a significant step towards fostering the use of hydrogen-based technology for long-distance transportation. Despite the environmental benefits, obstacles such as costly production, limited infrastructure, and ongoing development of hydrogen engines exist. The Tata Prima H.28 Hydrogen Truck is expected to be priced between ₹ 34.30 Lakh to ₹ 39.50 Lakh, indicating the potential for cleaner energy adoption in the commercial vehicle sector.
