Tata Motors has launched India’s first-ever hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck trials in a significant move towards sustainable freight transport. The trial, inaugurated by Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Pralhad Joshi, is part of India's ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070. Conducted under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the trial will see 16 hydrogen-powered trucks operating across key freight corridors like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, and others for the next 18-24 months. Tata Motors secured the government tender for this trial, funded by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, aiming to assess the commercial viability of hydrogen-powered long-haul transport. The trucks will utilize Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle technologies. Government officials highlighted hydrogen as the fuel of the future, crucial for emission reduction and energy self-reliance. Tata Motors executives expressed pride in leading the shift towards sustainable freight transport. The trial features three types of hydrogen trucks with ranges of 300 to 500 km, designed for cost-efficiency, zero emissions, and high performance. Tata Motors' initiative complements its existing lineup of green vehicles, emphasizing its commitment to alternative fuels. This endeavor not only promotes cleaner energy adoption in India but also contributes to the global advancement of sustainable freight transport.
