TR Group Launches New Hydrogen-Powered Prime Mover for Decarbonising NZ Transport Sector
Key Ideas
  • TR Group has introduced a 50-tonne hydrogen-powered prime mover converted by GBV, offering zero-emissions heavy freight transportation with comparable performance to diesel models.
  • The hydrogen fleet rollout includes 20 FCEVs supported by government funding, with technical specifications maintained from the original proposal with Hyzon Motors.
  • GBV's hydrogen prime mover features Toyota fuel cells, 124kWh battery, and onboard hydrogen storage, providing up to 500km range, with plans for 16 prime movers and 4 rigid trucks.
  • Toyota NZ and Hiringa Energy are key partners in the project, emphasizing the importance of hydrogen in decarbonisation efforts and providing a reliable refuelling network across the North Island.
TR Group has launched its first 50-tonne hydrogen-powered prime mover, marking a crucial step in decarbonising New Zealand's heavy transport sector. Converted by Christchurch-based GBV, the new hydrogen truck offers a zero-emissions alternative for heavy freight, maintaining comparable refuelling times and operating performance to diesel models. After restructuring its hydrogen fleet rollout due to the collapse of an agreement with Hyzon Motors, TR Group has signed new agreements with GBV and Hyundai New Zealand to provide 20 hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles. The prime mover, built by GBV, boasts Toyota fuel cells, a 124kWh battery, and onboard hydrogen storage, delivering a range of up to 500km. TR Group plans to have 16 hydrogen prime movers and 4 rigid trucks in operation. Toyota New Zealand and Hiringa Energy are key partners, supporting the project and highlighting the significance of hydrogen in achieving carbon neutrality. The Hiringa refuelling network covers a vast portion of North Island freight routes, offering transport operators a way to reduce carbon emissions without affecting productivity. TR Group emphasizes that green hydrogen is currently the only zero-emissions solution matching the operating pattern of diesel trucks, with a quick refuelling process that enables continuous and efficient operation.
