Walmart Canada has unveiled its new hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric semi-truck in Mississauga, Ontario, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly fleet. This initiative positions Walmart Canada as the first major retailer in the country to incorporate a hydrogen fuel cell electric semi-truck. The Nikola Hydrogen Fuel Cell EV Class 8 tractor boasts an impressive 800 km range and can prevent the emission of 97 metric tons of CO2 annually. Partnering with ITD Industries Inc., Walmart Canada aims to expand its transportation capabilities for longer-haul trips using alternative power sources. Gonzalo Gebara, the President and CEO of Walmart Canada, expressed his pride in this development, highlighting it as a pivotal step towards realizing the company's vision of becoming a regenerative entity. Operating with zero tailpipe emissions, the hydrogen-powered semi-truck uses high-pressure gaseous hydrogen stored in specialized tanks to generate electricity through a fuel cell stack, with water vapor as the only byproduct.
