Airbus is making strides in advancing superconducting technology for propulsion in hydrogen-powered aircraft through the development of the Cryoprop demonstrator. This innovative 2MW electric propulsion system will be cooled by liquid hydrogen using a recirculation of helium, showcasing the potential of superconducting materials in reducing voltage requirements compared to conventional powertrains. By leveraging cryogenically-frozen tape, Airbus aims to transmit electric power efficiently from the fuel source to the propulsion system, enhancing energy efficiency and performance. The Cryoprop architecture includes the distribution of liquid hydrogen to the fuel cell while simultaneously cooling helium to maintain the superconducting electrical transmission system. This initiative, led by Airbus's innovation arm UpNext, is expected to validate the benefits of superconducting technology for future aircraft development, addressing challenges related to industrialization, maintenance, and operations. Michael Augello, Chief of UpNext, highlights the potential performance improvements, weight reduction, and fuel savings that superconducting technologies can offer in hydrogen-powered aircraft. This development is crucial for enabling high-power electrification in larger and longer-range aircraft, overcoming limitations posed by traditional electrical transmission systems. Airbus's commitment to exploring superconducting solutions underscores the industry's shift towards more sustainable and efficient aviation technologies.
