American Airlines has announced an increased investment in ZeroAvia, a hydrogen-electric aviation company, by committing to purchase 100 hydrogen-electric plane engines for its regional flights. ZeroAvia, which was founded as a startup in 2017, has secured over $30 million in funding from various sources, including American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and United. Furthermore, in 2023, Airbus and sustainable airline startup EcoJet joined the funding support for ZeroAvia. ZeroAvia aims to introduce hydrogen-electric-powered aircraft with a capacity of 40 to 80 seats and a range of 700 miles by 2027, aligning with American Airlines' objective of significantly reducing heat-trapping gas pollution by 2050. The adoption of hydrogen-electric technology offers a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to traditional jet fuel, as it only emits water vapor instead of toxic exhaust and carbon dioxide. This transition could potentially lead to more affordable electric flights in the future. CEO Robert Isom highlighted the importance of investing in innovative technologies like alternate forms of propulsion to facilitate the transition to a low-carbon future in commercial aviation. ZeroAvia's founder and CEO, Val Miftakhov, expressed gratitude for American Airlines' support, emphasizing that the investment signifies progress towards clean aircraft propulsion and a realization of ZeroAvia's technology roadmap.
