ZeroAvia and ASL Aviation Holdings have entered into a conditional purchase agreement for up to 20 hydrogen-electric engines to be retrofitted into ASL's fleet of ATR regional turboprop aircraft. This initiative aims to develop some of the world's first zero-emission freight aircraft on a significant scale. The hydrogen-electric engines operate by converting hydrogen fuel into electricity through fuel cells, resulting in no CO2 emissions and a significant reduction in in-flight emissions. Additionally, these engines offer lower maintenance costs for airline operators. ZeroAvia has made progress in testing its hydrogen-electric engine systems, with successful test flights of a 600kW prototype and certification work for larger systems already in progress. ASL Aviation Holdings, as part of its broader ESG strategy, is exploring the potential of hydrogen-powered ATR freighter aircraft to reduce aviation carbon emissions. This aligns with ASL's commitment to sustainability and its efforts to raise awareness of innovative technologies through initiatives like ASL CargoVision.
