Aurora Flight Sciences, a Boeing company, has successfully conducted a seven-hour flight test of its hydrogen fuel-cell-powered small uncrewed aircraft system (sUAS), SKIRON-XLE, in Virginia. The SKIRON-XLE is part of Aurora's SKIRON sUAS product line and represents a significant advancement in flight endurance for the Group 2 platform. Equipped with two five-liter hydrogen tanks, an Intelligent Energy fuel cell, and other components, the SKIRON-XLE landed after seven hours with depleted hydrogen tanks and remaining battery power. Designed for long-range reconnaissance, the SKIRON-XLE offers up to three payload mounting locations and custom payload integration. It is compliant with U.S. FAA Part 107 regulations for sUAS operations and is BVLOS-ready. The vehicle's ruggedized ground control station features Kutta Technologies' Unified Ground Control Station (UGCS) software, along with a 2.4G 10W radio and tracking antenna providing a 75 km command and control link range. Jason Grzywna, senior director of products at Aurora Flight Sciences, highlighted that the SKIRON-XLE delivers the longer flight times that customers seek while being easy to deploy and operate. Aurora plans to offer this game-changing product to customers in early 2025, showcasing the company's capabilities as an innovator and integrator of advanced flight technologies. The successful flight test demonstrates the potential of hydrogen fuel cells in extending flight durations for reconnaissance missions in the aerospace industry.
