Avina Clean Hydrogen has announced an $820 million investment to establish a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production facility in Southwest Illinois, USA. Partnering with KBR, the plant will utilize alcohol-to-jet technology and hydrogen in the production process, targeting an annual output of 120 million gallons of SAF. Hydrogen will play a crucial role in catalytic upgrading during the production process to meet aviation standards. Although it's undisclosed whether hydrogen will be produced on-site or imported. The project, facilitated by a technology licensing agreement with KBR, aims to leverage existing rail and pipeline infrastructure to supply SAF to major Midwest airports. With an expected reduction of 25 million tons of carbon emissions annually, the facility will also generate 157 full-time jobs and 1,000 construction opportunities. Governor JB Pritzker of Illinois expressed support, highlighting the positive impact on the state's endeavor towards decarbonization and economic growth. The investment, backed by the REV program, underscores Illinois' commitment to clean energy initiatives and sustainable development.
