Boeing and Norsk e-Fuel have joined forces to pioneer sustainable aviation fuels in Europe through a strategic partnership. The agreement aims to establish one of the first large-scale facilities for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production using Power-to-Liquids (PtL) technology. By utilizing fossil-free energy to create green hydrogen, which will then be combined with recycled CO₂ from biogenic sources to produce electro-SAF or e-SAF, the process could potentially slash greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to traditional aviation fuels. This initiative aligns with global commitments in the aviation industry to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. While sustainable fuels represented only 0.53% of global commercial aviation fuel consumption in 2024, the European Union's ambitious RefuelEU SAF initiative targets 6% SAF usage by 2030 and a remarkable 70% by 2050, with specific sub-goals set for e-SAF. By uniting Boeing's sustainable fuel expertise with Norsk e-Fuel's technology and network, including key partner Norwegian, the collaboration aims to enhance SAF accessibility and competitiveness, ultimately supporting the shift towards sustainable aviation globally and contributing to international decarbonization goals.
