Boeing has joined forces with Norsk e-Fuel, a prominent developer of Power-to-Liquid (PtL) technology, to boost the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) globally, with a focus on Europe. This collaboration aims to accelerate the aviation industry's efforts to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, as outlined by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Norsk e-Fuel will leverage renewable energy sources to produce green hydrogen, which will be combined with recycled CO2 from biogenic sources to create e-SAF, offering a more eco-friendly alternative to traditional jet fuel. The partnership is pivotal as SAF currently represents only 0.53% of global commercial fuel use, and the European Union has set ambitious targets to increase the SAF share to 6% by 2030 and 70% by 2050. By teaming up with Norsk e-Fuel, Boeing aims to significantly contribute to achieving these targets, enhancing SAF production, and shaping policies to ensure the economic viability of the global SAF industry. This collaboration brings together Boeing's aviation and fuel industry expertise with Norsk e-Fuel's innovative technology, supported by partners like Norwegian Air, to drive the commercialization of e-SAF. The partnership is part of the broader industry momentum towards sustainable solutions, as seen in similar collaborations like the recent memorandum of understanding between OMV and Airbus. Norsk e-Fuel, established in 2019, is dedicated to decarbonizing aviation through the production of sustainable fuels, leveraging Power-to-Liquid technology to create renewable aviation fuels at scale.
