BPCL Collaborates with BluJ Aero for Hydrogen-Powered VTOL Aircraft Development in Kochi
Key Ideas
  • BPCL partners with BluJ Aero, ANERT, and CIAL to develop a hydrogen-fuelled VTOL aircraft ecosystem in Kochi.
  • The project aims to revolutionize urban air mobility by integrating green hydrogen-powered VTOL aircraft.
  • BPCL to establish hydrogen refueling infrastructure in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, advancing India's hydrogen technology capabilities.
  • Initiative strengthens BPCL's position in green energy solutions, supporting India's transition towards hydrogen-based aviation and transportation.
In a significant development for sustainable aviation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has joined hands with BluJ Aerospace, ANERT, and Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) to develop the first hydrogen-fuelled Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft ecosystem globally. The quadripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on March 12 in Kochi, India. This partnership aligns with India's ambitious goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2070 and marks a milestone in aviation innovation. The project's primary objective is to transform urban and regional air mobility by introducing green hydrogen-powered VTOL aircraft to enhance speed, reduce noise, improve efficiency, and significantly decrease carbon emissions. BPCL will play a key role in establishing hydrogen refueling infrastructure for the VTOL aircraft, utilizing its upcoming Hydrogen Refueling Stations (HRS) in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. Additionally, the company will engage in research and development activities focused on designing an Indigenous Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Hydrogen Fuel Cell to advance India's hydrogen technology capabilities. These efforts will further support Kerala's Hydrogen Valley Programme led by ANERT and promote the adoption of commercial hydrogen applications and transportation solutions. Through this collaboration, BPCL cements its position as a leader in green energy solutions and paves the way for India's transition towards hydrogen-based aviation and transportation.
