Dovetail Electric Aviation, based in Docklands, Australia, has partnered with Siemens from Plano, Texas, to develop innovative battery and hydrogen-electric propulsion systems for commercial aircraft. The collaboration aims to retrofit existing airplanes with zero-emission technologies, such as converting Cessna 208s into battery-electric aircraft and developing a hydrogen-electric retrofit for the Beechcraft King Air. This initiative has attracted the attention of Scandinavian Seaplanes and received financial backing from entities like Regional Express, the Victorian Government, Air Nostrum, and Volotea. By utilizing Siemens' Xcelerator software and NX X for cloud-enabled CAD, Dovetail can accelerate the development of propulsion systems, fostering collaboration between design teams in different countries. According to David Doral, the CEO of Dovetail Electric Aviation, the partnership with Siemens enables them to create digital twins of propulsion systems efficiently, enhancing global accessibility and collaboration. The development of a hydrogen-electric version with a fuel cell and hydrogen storage system is also in progress. Through NX X, Dovetail can streamline design processes, manage complex models, and expedite product development. Samantha Murray, Managing Director at Siemens Digital Industries Software, Australia and New Zealand, emphasized the significance of digital twins in designing mission-critical products like alternative aircraft propulsion systems.
