In the European Union, significant regulatory changes are set to drive the adoption of sustainable aviation fuels and renewable, low-carbon fuels in maritime transport. The ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation and FuelEU Maritime Regulation, both effective from January 1, 2025, mandate the use of sustainable fuels in the aviation and maritime sectors, respectively. The regulations aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by setting targets for emission reductions by 2050. Shipping companies and airport managing bodies are required to submit monitoring plans and reports to ensure compliance with the regulations. The EU initiatives highlight the commitment to the EU Green Deal and align with the global efforts to combat climate change. The Aviation Regulation requires a gradual increase in the percentage of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) in aviation fuel blends, with a target of 70% by 2050. Similarly, the Maritime Regulation targets an annual decrease in greenhouse emissions from ships, with a goal of 80% reduction by 2050. In parallel, the UK has introduced the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Mandate, which mirrors the EU regulations by imposing obligations on the use of SAF in jet fuel demand. The UK mandate sets targets for increasing SAF usage, with a revenue certainty mechanism to support the sustainable aviation fuel industry.
