Fortum and Norsk e-Fuel's Joint Venture in Rauma Driving Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production
Key Ideas
  • Norsk e-Fuel and Fortum plan to establish a 100 million liters annual capacity eSAF plant in Rauma, Finland, supporting Europe's net-zero targets by 2050.
  • The collaboration will focus on utilizing clean electricity and captured CO2 for electrolysis-based e-fuel production, aligning with EU's aviation fuel blending mandates.
  • Rauma's strategic location with sea and rail connections makes it an ideal hub for industrial projects, aiming to increase the supply of sustainable aviation fuel in Europe.
  • Fortum emphasizes the importance of community and stakeholder support in the decarbonization journey, highlighting the role of partnerships in driving energy transition.
Norsk e-Fuel, a Norwegian e-fuel company, and Fortum have announced a collaboration to establish a sustainable synthetic aviation fuel (eSAF) plant at the Port of Rauma in Finland. This marks Norsk e-Fuel's first project outside Norway and is part of their strategy to support Europe's net-zero targets by 2050. The project, currently in its early stages, aims to produce 100 million liters of liquid fuel annually through electrolysis using clean electricity and captured carbon dioxide, with a predominant focus on eSAF. The partnership between Fortum, Norsk e-Fuel, and Port of Rauma will involve planning electrical connections and permit processes for the production facility. Rauma's strategic location and strong industrial ecosystem provide an ideal setting for this initiative, enabling the region to contribute significantly to the supply of eSAF in Europe. The European Union's regulations mandate a gradual increase in the share of eSAF in aviation fuel at EU airports, with a blending mandate of 1.2% by 2030 and a target of 35% by 2050. The availability of a reliable electricity grid and access to clean electricity are crucial for the energy-intensive production of eSAF. Urs Pennanen, Senior Vice President at Fortum, emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders and local communities to drive decarbonization efforts, underlining the role of partnerships in supporting industry to reduce emissions. The joint venture between Fortum and Norsk e-Fuel in Rauma exemplifies a proactive approach towards sustainable aviation fuel production, aligning with the broader goals of transitioning to a cleaner energy future.
