Galp's Sustainable Transformation: Biofuels and Hydrogen Production at Sines Refinery
Key Ideas
  • Galp's partnership with the European Investment Bank (EIB) in constructing a Biofuels unit and a renewable Hydrogen production unit at the Sines Refinery represents a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions.
  • The Biofuels unit will produce low-carbon fuels like sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel, essential for the decarbonization of heavy-duty road transport and aviation, aligning with EU mandates.
  • The renewable Hydrogen production unit, one of the largest in Europe, aims to produce up to 15,000 tons of renewable hydrogen per year, contributing to the EU's energy independence and climate goals.
  • These projects support the EU's goal of climate neutrality by 2050 and benefit from Recovery and Resilience Plan incentives, fostering a fair and sustainable energy transition.
Galp, in partnership with the European Investment Bank (EIB), is undertaking two transformative projects at the Sines Refinery in Portugal. The Biofuels unit, financed with €250 million, will convert vegetable oils and residual fats into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel, crucial for decarbonizing transport. Simultaneously, a renewable Hydrogen production unit, funded with €180 million, will be among Europe's largest, producing up to 15,000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually. These projects, receiving a total investment of €650 million, aim to support the decarbonization of heavy-duty road transport and aviation. The Biofuels unit is set to begin production in 2026, producing 270,000 tons of renewable fuels, meeting EU aviation fuel mandates. The renewable Hydrogen unit, scheduled to go online in the upcoming year, aligns with global climate goals and reinforces the EU's energy independence. The EIB's €430 million loan reflects its commitment to financing sustainable energy solutions, emphasizing the importance of advanced biofuels and renewable hydrogen production. Galp's Executive Board Member highlighted the necessity of energy companies, private investments, and government support for Portugal's energy relevance amidst global changes. These projects align with the EU's climate objectives, contributing to climate neutrality by 2050 and supporting the REPowerEU plan. With incentives from the Recovery and Resilience Plan, these initiatives underline a significant step towards a fair and sustainable energy transition, combining innovation, financing, and environmental commitment.
