A significant agreement was reached in Rome at a ministerial level meeting involving Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, Germany, and Austria, with the aim of enhancing hydrogen cooperation between the Maghreb region and the European Union. Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, led the meeting alongside Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, the Minister for the Environment and Energy Security. The project entails the development of a 3,300 km pipeline, with a substantial portion dedicated to hydrogen transport, set to deliver 4 million tonnes of hydrogen annually from Algeria by 2030. The joint declaration of intent signed by the participating countries underscores the significance of building hydrogen plants, infrastructure, and attracting investments to support the transition towards sustainable energy and achieve global climate targets. Algeria's Minister of Energy and Mines expressed the country's ambition to position itself as a pivotal hub for producing and exporting green hydrogen to Europe, emphasizing the potential for job creation and fostering innovation. The project's focus extends to creating investment opportunities in Algeria and Tunisia to bolster the local market. This initiative marks a crucial step towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future through enhanced collaboration and infrastructure development.
