KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and ZeroAvia have joined forces to work on a demonstration flight using ZeroAvia's ZA2000 hydrogen-electric engines for large regional turboprops. Hydrogen-electric engines use hydrogen in fuel cells to generate electricity, powering electric motors and emitting only low-temperature water vapor, leading to up to a 90% reduction in climate impact compared to traditional kerosene-fueled flights. KLM and ZeroAvia plan to conduct an A-to-B flight demonstration between two airport locations in 2026, focusing on regulatory permits, liquid hydrogen fuel supply, and infrastructure for aircraft fueling.
